Visited Countries

world map with visited countries marked

I love to travel.

Traveling to other countries may not necessarily make a person wiser, stronger, or better, and getting to know one's own country can be just as rewarding as a long haul flight to the other side of the world.

Yet as I look at this map of countries I have visited, recalling the names of places I have been to, seeing the faces, hearing the voices and remembering the thoughts of people I have met, I am overwhelmed by fond memories. I consider myself fortunate enough to have been able to travel as much as I have.

But looking at the map, I also realize how much there is left to see, smell, taste, touch, feel, and think. And I wonder how many friends I am still to meet.

The world is a big and wonderful place.

This list complements the map by giving a more accurate representation of the countries and places I have visited:

Note: A visited country is one where I have spent at least 24 hours. A visited place in a country is one that I or my company have intentionally stopped in. Time spent on board aircraft, ships, in vehicles, or in transit at airports, train stations, bus terminals, etc., does not in itself qualify as a visit.

Most people don't particularly like to choose favourites but if you had to would you be able to and if you were able to what would it be and why?!

  2. Lars Holst

Oh dear. I actually thought about marking down my favorites, i.e. the places I would most likely go back to, but then I realized I'd probably want to revisit most of the countries and places I listed, albeit for different reasons.

But alright, if you held a knife to my throat and forced me to pick, say, five countries, regardless of the purpose of visit, I'd choose China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. They are all large, diverse (in nature, culture, history, architecture, infrastructure, etc), beautiful, and have lots of places left to visit, aside from those I've already been to. Substitutes: Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Taiwan, and the U.K.

My five favorite places would be a bit easier to name I think. I'd pick Tokyo, Hong Kong, New York and Paris because I love big cities, and Lappland, Sweden, because I love hiking (and tend to get a bit tired of big cities after a while). Substitutes: Hamburg, Prague, Seoul, Singapore, and Taipei for big cities, and Korea, Taiwan and Thailand for hiking.

So am I off the hook now?

  3. miamh

Ack I'd agree to the NY, the Tokyo and the Hong Kong but I'll balk on the Paris one! Bad experience but never mind lol..Lappland is pretty..NZ has some quite good tramping/hiking spots..I think that they places you've chosen wouldn't change too much after you visit the rest..happy trails anyway! :D

  4. Lars Holst

Paris? Details please! NZ is pretty high up on my hiking list. Have you been to Lappland?

  5. miamh

Well the experience was more of a personal one so the details are probably not worthy of note..did have a few probs with the RER but then who doesn't first time around..and I'll tell anyone who asks that Paris is stinky..(again personal kinda crossover lol) Lappland seen but not stayed in..I'm allergic to blondes lol j/k!!!

  6. Lars Holst

    RER?

  7. miamh

Ahh oui oui monsieur..the Reseau Express Regional..like the Metro..it's good for going long distances and is for the outer regions and suburbs of Paris..

It's the whole ticket thing that typically gets confusing!

  8. miamh

Let me know if I answered this or not I was doing a million things at once!

  9. Lars Holst

Yes, you did answer : ) This comment moderation thing gets confusing at times, even for me.

I never tried the RER when I was in Paris, but buying tickets is almost always confusing, wherever you go, isn't it? Having said that, I know I have some good examples, if I could only remember.

Well, now you only need to explain the stinky bit, and the "allergic to blondes" thing : )

  10. miamh

Thats nice that you mentioned that it was the confusion of the comments moderation thing when really it was just user error..thank you for making me feel better hahaha..

I dare not explain the stinky and the blonde thing for fear of being labeled as bitter lol..but maybe one day over a saft glogg we will get into the semantics of that one! but note that I do believe the city of love label is a farce! :P

I'll have to think of all of my bad ticket experiences as well so I can share..you first though!

    Hey Lars :)

I have a small correction for you, in the list of the visited countries, you mention Mostar, Croatia... it's actually not located in Croatia, but in Bosnia and Herzegovina: http://bhtourism.ba/cities/mostar.htm.

  12. Lars Holst

mcni7e, you are right! Fixed. Thanks!
