The Bloggies

Taylor McKnight has posted an impressive set of screenshots showing his nominations for the Fourth Annual Weblog Awards, a.k.a. The Bloggies.

Very nice work indeed, and an interesting selection of weblogs.

I nominated my favorites a few days ago, and I see that some of those are on Taylor's list too. Others I hadn't seen before, which to me is the best thing with the awards.

But one of Taylor's nominations for best European weblog caught me by surprise. Being nominated by a man of great skill and taste (an increasingly rare combination these days) is an honor.

I just hope I don't win; trying to live up to the expectations of an entire continent is a scary thought. I imagine heaps of emails coming in from the obscurest corners of Europe, expressing great disappointment with how "you haven't posted anything about our local traditions here in [insert unpronounceable name of obscure European country, region, city, village, etc.] for several weeks now. We are beginning to feel that you no longer represent us in the best way. Perhaps you would like us to send over some more cheese?". I might even feel the pressure to post something of interest every now and then.

The deadline for nominations is 10:00 pm Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5) on Monday, January 12th, 2004.

Wow. Now I'm the one honored for the complement, thank you.

Also, if you *do* win the best European blog, then I will be heavily consulting you for all things Europe if i study abroad this summer ;)

It's funny how you recognize your daily reads from a 200 * 100 image. Design really leaves an image in your mind.

Taylor, please send cheese in advance, OK? :)

    Where are you going to/from?

Mark, yes you are right. Also, I have often found that if something looks good, then it usually is. Not a universal truth by any means, but still. I think it boils down to passion; people and organizations who are passionate about what they do, usually do it well.

Well right now I'm looking into a program in Paris, which is my top pick. I would probably settle for anywhere in Europe though, because either way it'll be more exciting then being in Florida!

Hehe, what kind of cheese do you prefer? :) stinky?

Stinky cheese is the best Taylor, the best!

I've only been to Florida once. It was for a conference, and I never actually got to see much of anything, except for the outskirts of Orlando, and, of course, Disney World. The most diplomatic way of putting it, especially if you're comparing to Paris, is "they are very different places". ;)

But I would have loved to see Miami, Kennedy Space Center, and probably lots of other places too, if only I had heard about them.

Anyway, if you have the chance to go to Paris, go.

As for the rest of Europe, it all depends on where you end up. There are plenty of dumps to avoid, and that goes for both schools and places. But of course, if you actually intend to study, a less exciting city than Paris might not be such a bad idea : )

Kennedy Space Center is truly awesome. So are all the beaches :)

As far as studying goes, I think I've forgotten how. Three of my classes at Univ of Florida at the moment are online, heh. The only class I actually have to attend is 'advanced web design' which is anything BUT advanced.

Also, now that we've befriended each other, I feel liberated to mention that this text box I am typing in slightly gets overlapped by the bottom blue side bar in IE6 XP. Not a huge deal, but sometimes you cant see what your typing for a second. Just fyi :)

Taylor, I'm afraid there's a minimum requirement of 50 comments before you are allowed to even mention Internet Explorer.

Just joking (or am I? ;) ). Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't aware of this particular Explorer glitch. I'll look into it, although I am pessimistic about the chances of finding a standards compliant solution, or any solution for that matter, as I have no idea what's causing it.

Now tell me, son, have you considered other browsers? You may just find that the textarea behaves much better in Mozilla, Firebird, Opera, and (as far as I know) Safari.
