28mm Issue 011
Issue 011 of 28MM, an online photography magazine, is out.
Unlike many other online photography publications, 28MM has a clean and intuitive layout that provides quick access to the photos. A single click on one of the featured series will bring up its first image. The reader can then choose to read about the photographer ("view the Details"), proceed to the next or previous image, or return to the front page. This navigation pattern is repeated throughout the series. It's simple, it makes the pages load fast, and it works.
Most importantly, there is some great work to be seen.

Most importantly: It has kittens. Can't go wrong with kittens.
Nice site. Love the typography. I found the lack of a standardized general navigation menu offputting at first, but it actually works quite well once you "get" that the mag"s name is a link and the featured picture (the kitten) is another (I kept seeing the whole thing as a header and clicking on the kitten).

Oh, but they change the cover between issues. See e.g. Issue 010 and Issue 009. But of course, you have a full month to enjoy that evil little cat. Personally, I prefer puppies.
About the nav: now that you mention it, it does seem a bit counterintuitive. But I suppose that's more so if compared to weblogs. Regardless of which, I quickly "got it", and when I think about it, it actually makes sense to separate those areas: because it's a photography magazine, people can be expected to be specifically interested in the cover photo.
Comparing issues 009 and 010, you can also see how they changed the location of the "Past Issues" dropdown, from the top right corner to below the cover image. Much better. It's nice to see those small improvements being made.

I just found the same site the other day when looking for online photo gallery inspiration.
I think, in general, photologs and date-based photo galleries have a lot more style than general weblogs. Maybe because their owners are more artisitic in nature.
This site really does a good job on focusing (excuse the pun) it's core subject, and it's presentation instantly lets you know what it's all about.
Lars - how could you call that cute little cat evil??

Exactly my thoughts Mike. I also stumbled upon it very recently (can't believe I have managed to miss the previous ten issues).
At the same time, the web seem to be drowning in photos to the extent where it is becoming increasingly harder to find quality material, so perhaps it is not so strange.
Design-wise, yes I definitely think you have a point there about those site owners being more artistic. But could it also be that it's actually "easier" to design with photos than without? A good image has so much style in itself that you really don't need much more. Or?
Well, seeing as I, in future posts, may compare cats to women, I probably shouldn’t have.
