More on Abbreviations
In a comment to my Abbreviations, Acronyms, Initialisms post, Karl Dubost pointed me to , , Accessibility & Automation by Jacques Distler.
As it turns out, Jacques makes points that are very similar to mine, and in addition addresses some important automation issues which I didn't touch upon. Also, Movable Type users should be pleased to see that Jacques has hacked an interesting patch for its acronym plugin.
The post is succinct and well written, and I recommend it. Make sure to read the comments as well.
Another thing: Jacques wrote his post on September 10, 2003, which is more than two weeks before I posted mine. Should the fact that I didn't find his post earlier worry me? Probably. In my research, I am usually happy to find material that is just a few months old. But in the world of blogging and page ranking, two weeks seem to be a long time.
I don't know if this should be seen as a case of great minds thinking alike, or bad research on my behalf? Perhaps it was a combination.
However, this does highlight the importance of extending your research beyond . For example, when I Googled on "", Jaques's post was not among the first ten pages of results. This is as far I usually go. Clearly, this is not always enough.
