I'm a big fan of bloggs that have bounding edges… But with desktops of varying sizes…. I'm more a fan of text that auto wraps to the width of the browser… or do something alittle more interesting, but still read-able.
That being said… some pretty sweet looking sites.

IMPORTANT
Dear all,
It has been brought to my attention that one of the designs listed here (Penck - sixth from the top) has been heavily inspired/stolen (you decide) from das Netzbuch by Ralf Graf. After examining the two sites and their markup, this does indeed appear to be the case. In fact, in the original
title
attribute of the anchor linking to Penck, I noted that the "design and content has changed since screenshot.". Upon closer examination, the markup has changed as well. Although the details have been lost, I do recall that the markup and design of the weblog I visited for the screenshot was a lot closer in spirit to that of das Netzbuch than what is currently found at penck.de. View source and design on the two sites for a comparison - the differences should be obvious.Possibly unrelated to this, but nevertheless adding to the confusion is the fact that
http://penck.de/
(without the www.) points to another site. Very strange.Based on the above, the lack of contact information at penck.de, and reports and comments from a number of individuals, I have decided to change the attribution and link to point to Ralf Graf's weblog, which I consider to be the original design.
If indeed this is a genuine case of design theft remains to be seen, but just so that everyone is clear on this: taking a copyrighted work without permission and masking it as your own work is illegal. And a lot of other things too.
As for the screenshot, I have decided that it stays up, so that everyone can form their own opinion.
Any objections to this decision should be communicated through my contact form.
Regardless of which, a visit to das Netzbuch is recommended.

Thanks for your comments, trackbacks, and kind words.
Props and shameless plugs are always welcome. All links get checked. However, I am usually not able to respond to individual requests for design critique, neither paid nor unpaid. I wish I could, but there is a day job to attend to, after all. I am flattered to be asked though.
Blair and Jennifer, it was my pleasure. But as I noted in a comment to the first volume: I just took the screenshots; you did all the work.
Kitta, Lars Holet sends you his best : )
Andreas, that's something I kept reflecting on as I put together the two lists, and I hope it came out showing exactly that: a great variety.
vveerrgg, show us.
Luke, people only come here for the screenshots ; )
How do you get on the A-list? I don't know. I'm not on it. But what I do know is that I think it's a flawed measure of pretty much anything, except perhaps for a weblog's Technorati rating. At least that's the only correlation I can think of (but even that measure is bad since rankings fluctuate wildly).
Why do you need a large number of weblogs linking to you?
I'm not saying that it's bad to be A-listed. I enjoy reading a dozen or so of the Technorati Top 100 weblogs. I also appreciate that having a large number of weblogs link to you can be desirable and even beneficial to some people. I have the luxury (in this regard) of not depending on links or community credibility for my business. Conversely, because my business is not web design/development related, I can't spend as much time interacting with other people in the online community as I would have liked. That's the flip side of the coin. So if I was doing this for a living, I'd probably put more effort into providing content, maintaining relationships, and being recognized by peers and potential clients.
But as it stands, I would rather have a small group of readers that I trust and respect, and with whom there is a possibility of interacting on a more meaningful level.
Your comment holds an interesting question though: do you write for yourself or for an audience? I disagree with what seems to be a rather popular notion in the weblog community: that writing for yourself is good, while writing for others is bad. I believe both ways can work. Not that these approaches need to be mutually exclusive.
Then there is visual design. I think most people would agree that a beautiful site with carefully chosen typography is likely to attract more visitors than an ugly one, all other things equal. I've come across countless webloggers who could have increased their readership dramatically had they only bothered to address basic usability and readability issues. Some of these even seem to take an almost perverted pride in not caring about such things. At the very least, they should be forcefed "Reading Design", a highly recommended article by Dean Allen on using design to communicate.
But the best advice I can give you is to rethink the value and viability of being "A-listed" in the first place.
Emily, thanks. Yes, there are rumors of a third volume. But you didn't hear them from me : )
Noel, I'd like to see your old layout.
Karim, you can't go wrong with jazz, coffee, and the web. Feel free to add me to your list of supporters.
Mike, thanks. The comment layout nearly drove me insane. It seems that
list-style-position:inside
behaves differently in Firefox (possibly in all Gecko engines, didn't check) and Opera. Incidentally, IE seems to agree with Opera on this one. The difference lies in how the heading is positioned relative to the list item number: Firefox pushes the heading down below the number, whilst Opera and IE display them on the same line. There are a few other differences as well, so I had to resort to hacking three different variants. As it stands, Geckoists get the full splendor/horror, while Explorers and Operators see a stripped down but fully readable layout. I haven't checked Safari, but feeding three browsers different styles makes for ugly enough hacks. Now could someone please make me change the subject? Ah, yes, thank you Mike.Dick, thanks. The Nobel Prize? This was most unexpected! First of all, I would like to thank… : )
saleh, reza, nik, thanks.
James, I didn't know there had been any modifications, but as long as you're okay with the credits, then fine.
A minor clarification of comment #20 is in place: it wasn't Ralf who brought my attention to the matter, but one of his readers. Ralf and I have emailed on the issue though, and I have informed him of my decision.
As for what to call it, I really don't know. It's not an outright design theft, since, apparently, the colors and photograph were changed. The markup and style is no longer possible to check, so no clues there.
Personally, I would have been okay with this if the original author had been asked and credited, either on the front, about or colophon page (preferable), or in the html or css source (less preferable). I checked all the sites listed here in this way, and there was no such credit given.
However, what ultimately prompted my decision and comment was this post by Markus Kniebe. Have a look if you are interested.
geek note: the markup has been updated to make use of the
hreflang
attribute on the anchor element (in Mozilla/Firefox: place mouse over screenshot and right click for properties; in IE and Opera: click uninstall, then install Mozilla/Firefox and follow previous instructions).Lars Holst
Comment on February 16, 2004 at 12:28 am
Noel, I didn't know (I only checked the front page at Relevantly). I did anticipate there would be cases such as yours though. The reasoning behind explicitly including a link to the designer anyway was that there is a technical/legal difference between the individual and the company, is there not? At least if LLC means what I think it means (I may be wrong, of course). And, perhaps more importantly, I thought a link to the firm wouldn't hurt (good for business and all that).
I agree that the wording may be misinterpreted though. The best I can come up with at 2am is to change the legend to simply say "designer". Drop me a note at your earliest convenience if you have other suggestions. I aim to please : )

Comment on February 16, 2004 at 8:51 pm
Christine, thanks for your comments. The selection is based on color. However, the criteria were based not so much on my personal preferences as on the way the screenshots would work together visually. I wanted to create a harmonious arrangement of colors and patterns, and went so far as to exclude a number of weblogs because their color schemes didn't fit in. These will most likely appear in the next volume, which should see more vivid colors and patterns.
I will update the introduction to reflect the importance of color in the selection.
This is not to say that the selection doesn't reflect my preferences. Of course it does. I have already mentioned that I'm partial to centered content, and as far as colors go, blue is one of my favorites.
Color preferences are always going to be a very personal thing, which indeed your comment shows, but there are colors that work better than others for many people. Blue is one of those.
But the sites should really be judged on their own rather than in the context of this list.

Dear Persian Blog Friends, will you please be so kind to make your email-adres in clear English visible on your website, so I can respond. Because despite of the beauty of design, some drive me crazy, not because of your language but due to very simple to solve css, html and java errors for which I needed more then once the disaster-button touch [crtl-alt-del] and even worse. I wished I could write this as well in here in Arabic but I can't. But i'm sure you will get the picture. And otherwise tell me how I can learn to write a short summary of my website in your motherlanguage.

Great Blog Designs
I'm working on designing a weblog to use as a freelance client communication tool…yeah, I'm too cheap for basecamp, and don't like the interface anyway. Anyway, Dudz pointed me to this site which has some really well designed blog ideas - love em…

This is slightly off topic, but web designers (and some bloggers are) might care to know:
http://lorem-ipsum.info/generator2/ delivers randomly generated filler text for typographers and web designers in various languages and charsets (Chinese, Greek, Hindi, Cyrillic, L33tspeak, Esperanto etc.) besides the traditional Lorem Ipsum dummy copy.
Being the proud owner, I dare to say that it beats http://lipsum.com/ by far. … though the interface is certainly arguable.

Hi from Brazil. Nice selection of blogs you have here. But i think some of them are not that well designed to be listed here. Anyway, a lot are very interesting and inspiring. Those that have clean and simple designs are the best in my opinion.

[…] I found a few very cool websites devoted to weblogs… one in particular that I thought was clear, concise, with refreshing content was photoblogs.com. It’s nice to stray from the traditional “text” weblog into some that offer more of a photographic intention. I admired the entire list from welldesignedweblogs.com – they provide inspiration for me to finish my own site – thejavajive.com – yet the list makes me realize how much I’d like to improve this blog. […] The Well-Designed Weblogs series is a subjective and non-scientific selection of usable and readable weblogs that are defined as having an aesthetically pleasing design that has been accomplished through the use of stylesheets rather than layout tables, font tags, and inline images. Some of these weblogs have received the attention they deserve, some have not. Some you might have seen before, some you might not. Some validate, some don’t. Some are updated frequently, some are not. Some have something to say, some have not. They have been selected because they look good, in very different ways. September 25, 2007 | Filed Under CSS: Selected Showcase […]
